Mountain Ascent: Beacon Relay Installation
May 8, 2025 – 06:00 EDT

Before dawn’s first glow, Paladin Hardy roused the squad at Appalachia Citadel for a summit mission: install a radio beacon atop Black Mountain to extend Brotherhood communications across the wasteland. At 06:00, Knight Sergeant Price, Knight Vega, Senior Scribe Kreep, Knight Nanz, Senior Scribe Muffin, Scribe Aspirant Sean, and Scribe Aspirant Ozzy began the arduous ascent, their footsteps echoing in the damp mountain air.

Kreep broadcast her narration over the Brotherhood frequency: “Elevation at 2,100 feet, temperature dropping below ten degrees. Expect high-wind shear near the peak.” Nanz and Price led the climb, clearing corrupted limbs and unstable shale with Brotherhood-design repulsorlifts. Cougar calls echoed from below—signals of predatory Deathclaws stirring in the hills. Vega, scanning with his enhanced ghoul sight, warned, “Two Deathclaws bearing south-southeast—Dagger, 150 meters.” Immediately, Sean and Ozzy formed a phalanx behind Vega, barrels trained upward in case of an ambush.

Muffin, lugging the heavy beacon assembly, tripped on a frost-coated rock. Hardy and Kreep lunged forward to steady him as Price whispered encouragement: “Keep moving, Brother. The mountaintop won’t conquer itself.” By 07:15, the summit’s jagged outcrop came into view; swirling mists masked the narrow walkway to the antenna mount. Vega stepped ahead, checking for floor traps—ancient Brotherhood explosives meant to deter raider overrun. Finding none, he signaled for the team to follow.

At exactly 08:00, the eight Brotherhood members worked in unison: Nanz and Muffin bolted the beacon’s base to the tower’s main strut, while Ozzy and Sean ran power conduits back to the portable generator. Kreep calibrated the transmitter dish, humming a Brotherhood anthem as she keyed in frequency codes. Vega and Price kept vigilant watch, rifles cradled against their armor. Hardy placed his palm on the control panel and initiated the power-up sequence. Green lights blinked, the beacon whirred to life, and a steady signal pulsed out across the Appalachian sky.

Just as the dawn sun broke through, a distant roar echoed—a pair of Deathclaws had broken off from the herd below and were charging uphill. Price shouted, “Engage target one—protect the beacon!” Vega and Hardy dispatched the closest beast with synchronized plasma and laser bursts, while Nanz and Sean flanked for a pincer maneuver on the second. Muffin, at Kreep’s call, jettisoned a portable smoke dispenser to obscure the beasts’ line of sight long enough for the others to deliver the final shots.

By 08:45, the peak lay silent save for the hum of the fully operational beacon. Hardy surveyed the horizon: “Signal is strong. Appalachia Citadel, this is Black Mountain Relay—link established.” Kreep recorded her closing remarks: “Mission accomplished under hazardous conditions. Brotherhood unity prevailed once more.” As they began their descent, the eight walked in contented silence—knowing that their combined skills had not only beaten the mountain but also extended the Brotherhood’s reach across the wasteland.
